A Final Appeal

I've held off on making an announcement like this, but after speaking to a few other creators about the issue I figured that it was probably the only option left rather than just silently slinking away. For some context, this project doesn't have a team behind it - its just me (a writer, with no real programming experience outside of self-taught experience in Inform) - nor does it have some massive amount of funding as it currently is making very very little. Despite that I've made a pretty sizable game with a massive amount of content.

However, the game is falling far short of expectations, and has been since it was released. This is in spite of an update that tripled the size of the project and gave the game a definitive ending and tons of content. Needless to say but I should not have to do what would be thousands of USD of work as a commission for free to maintain what little this game brings in currently, nor is that even a possibility. Based on what was said by other creators, the consensus seems to be that the game should've been paywalled from the start as an incentive to support - and that I should move on to another project instead. That is something that would really suck, as it would mean all the effort I put into this would be wasted - however, I don't see any real path at this point.

Before I fully commit to deciding to abandon the project though, I thought I would make a final appeal. Putting everything out there and asking once more for people to try to help me make this work, and correcting the issue of incentives.

Here is the Roadmap that I had planned out, should I get the support:

-Redesign the entire first half of the game to be in line with the quality of the second, including expanding each deck, adding in three new slug-tentacle enemies, adding in new scenes and possibility even secrets, and overall making it much more enjoyable to play.

-Adding in a small area to the second half of the game to allow encounters from the first half.

-Adding in new enemies to the second half of the game, one per deck plus the final boss area.

-Adding in more corruption nodes to make corrupting Nal more dynamic.

-Artwork, though that is a distant dream at this point given the price quotes.

And of course a lot of this would be subject to change and addition based on input from those helping to make it possible. If any of this appeals to any of you, and if any of you think you'd want to see any of this come into reality, then I would ask that you help support the game. You can do so on my Subscribestar, my Ko-fi, or here on itch.io itself! Sharing the game around also helps, though there are few places where I haven't shared it myself.

I still think we can prove those I talked to wrong, and get things back on track and make this project work. To those that have already helped support it, I greatly appreciate it! It means a lot that the work I make for others is itself appreciated and enjoyed - and I sincerely hope that this project can pop off in a positive way so that I can continue to work on erotic games in the future!

After reading the comments in this section i have to agree that if the game is expanded any future versions should be behind a paywall. I've already donated a few times during development just because i believed in the project, paying for more content is no big issue on my part. As another comment stated, doing something similar to Cruel Serenade with the first "chapter" serving as a free demo and the rest being behind paywall would be (in my opinion) the best course of action should you decide to continue on this project.

Pay wall it! You're putting in a lot of effort into the game and I think it's reasonable you want to have your efforts funded. Just leave the current version out as a demo so people can get interested and pay to help out.

Yeah, I don't think 'pulling the rug' as it were with the current version would help any (though maybe?), but future versions will definitely be pay-walled. I already put up the Subscribestar version on here for 4USD, so we'll see if that helps!

Hey NalDev, just wanted to say I tossed a bit of support your way cause I really like this niche of game. Kudos for taking the time to make and further develop it.

When it comes to gathering support, my two cents is that this game starting free was fine with its relatively small scope and you not being established yet. With the benefit of hindsight though, I think doing something similar to BitShift with Cruel Serenade would've worked better in this case. Where the first part of the game stays free with continuing support and improvement, acting as a demo and mostly its own contained story, and the second part being put behind a reasonable paywall to continue what the first part established and to gather funds.

As they say though, hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

All that being said, I hope you're able to find all the support and funding you need to continue work on NiP. Good work so far 👍

I really appreciate it. Since putting out that absolutely massive update, the 1.5 one, I've actually lost supporters (I can't even figure how) - so anything I can get helps, though obviously a consistent and decent stream of revenue is needed to continue the project. I've put up the subscribestar version on here for 4USD - so you should be able to download it (I have no idea how itch.io works in that regard).

And yeah, given how much larger the second half is than the first - I definitely should've done something like that. Hopefully I can salvage things, get them back on track, and then just not make the mistake next time.

4 usd? thats actually a really fair price. even i could afford that after an afternoon of surveys thanks. curious to see what you make next.

naldev, i can say with confidence that all a paywall would do is annoy people and get it leaked on sites like kemonoparty. i cant spend anymore then i have, moneys tight for me so all a paywall would do is make it impossable for some like myself to even get it. i cant give anymore for now but i can talk about the game a bit, mind if i do that in a few places? just a question have you thought of running a minor ad campagin to make people more aware that your product exists? its not a lot but f59zone and e621 lets people pay to run ads... alternatively a commision of nal in the middle of some peril from the game uploaded to e621 with a link to the main page and a small blurb would likely be a better ad then any banner ad if you word things right and hit some popular keywords. sorry if any of this comes off as awful. im just trying to help all i have is my brainpower... well whats left of it.

"naldev, i can say with confidence that all a paywall would do is annoy people and get it leaked on sites like kemonoparty."

Lucky for you I wasn't planning on 'pulling the rug' and making what is already freely available pay-walled, I was simply going to abandon the project and make sure the next isn't. I can't not earn money, and working on a game is a massive time commitment.

"just a question have you thought of running a minor ad campagin to make people more aware that your product exists? its not a lot but f59zone and e621 lets people pay to run ads..."

Paying for ads would take a lot of money. I would not only have to pay for the ad space, but also hire an artist to help make artwork for the ad itself. I simply don't have that kind of money, and the money this game rakes in is not even enough to pay for a week's worth of meals - let alone artwork and ad space.

"alternatively a commision of nal in the middle of some peril from the game uploaded to e621 with a link to the main page and a small blurb would likely be a better ad then any banner ad if you word things right and hit some popular keywords."

I already did this over a month ago, I put down a couple hundred on not only art to advertise on e621 (you can easily find that art by looking up avali tentacles on the site), but also on artwork for some of the enemies in the game. All its done is drain my finances. I saw an uptick in views, but I have not gained any more support for the game. I don't think people realize how expensive stuff is, as I've spent more on this game than I've gotten from it.

"sorry if any of this comes off as awful. im just trying to help all i have is my brainpower... well whats left of it."

I appreciate the thought.
